Susan Stewart is an American poet, essayist, and literary critic. She was born in York, Pennsylvania, and grew up in the nearby town of Dallastown. She attended the University of Pennsylvania, where she earned her B.A. in 1974 and her M.A. in 1975. She then went on to earn her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1981. Stewart is the author of several books of poetry, including The Hive (1984), The Forest (1992), Columbarium (2003), and Red Rover (2011). She has also written several books of essays, including On Longing: Narratives of the Miniature, the Gigantic, the Souvenir, the Collection (1993), and Poetry and the Fate of the Senses (2002). Stewart is currently a professor of English at Princeton University, where she has taught since 1988. She is the recipient of numerous awards, including the MacArthur Fellowship, the National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. She is also a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
